New avenue for citydev in the circular economy

As the entire real estate world becomes more aware that buildings are not an end in themselves, but there to serve a purpose, citydev.brussels is taking an active role in this aspect. Under the name of Irisphere it is promoting the circular economy in Brussels by encouraging small and medium companies to collaborate together.

There are many public and private partners in this initiative, all of which have an interest in promoting the circular economy, and in sustainability. It is thus a transversal project involving citydev, employers and others.

The concept was presented yesterday in the most apt of buildings – Greenbizz – itself a citydev development for exactly this type of occupant. The CEO of citydev – Benjamin Cadranel – explained that the organisation now has some 200 hectares of land on which SME’s are located in the Brussels Capital Region. He also said that tenants were in part selected according to their ability to contribute to the ‘sharing’ philosophy which characterises Greenbizz and other premises. Benjamin Cadranel took the opportunity to show the construction work underway just behind Greenbizz – Tivoli Green city, which will provide 400 apartments including social and low rent.

It is perhaps fitting that citydev underlined the fact that its buildings are there to serve a purpose by asking some existing tenant companies of Greenbizz to explain their experiences of the sharing economy. They were enthusiastic about the fact that the concept really worked, and inter-company meetings led to the sharing of ideas, materials and infrastructure – exactly how it was planned to be. It is even more fitting that some of these companies – Rotor and Dzerotudio in particular – are involved in recycling and re-using construction materials when older buildings are being demolished or refurbished.
