Workspace design - the concrete results

There is a great deal written and talked of the ‘New Way of Working’ and of new workplace design in particular. Real Estate consultant and broker JLL has undertaken a survey (‘The Human Experience’) to look at what all this means in concrete terms. It starts out by affirming that a place of work is far more than a property, it is a living environment that helps individuals and businesses craft and experience a better fusion of life and work.

From the basis that a place of work is of course somewhere to enable the company to flourish, JLL concludes that introducing innovative workspaces will drive engagement and that companies can use workspace to foster an entrepreneurial spirit to attract and retain employees. It goes on to say that companies and organisations should consider adjusting workplace density to improve employee effectiveness.

This goal of creating happier, more motivated employees is key to success, and JLL goes on to say that agility – the choice to work elsewhere – will improve performance and quality of life. Behind much of the concept of new workspace design is the reality that employees appreciate space for concentration, regeneration and movement. Happiness, it goes on to say, is the number one priority for a positive workplace experience and companies must consider spaces dedicated to health and well-being

Among key findings are that workplaces must provide a broader range of innovative spaces to meet employee expectations and attract and retain talents. This last point is crucial – HR is taking an increasingly important role in many aspects of company decision-making, from the required remuneration packages to the right company cars, and workplace design is part of all this.

To make things absolutely clear, JLL’s findings state that spaces dedicated to collaboration and teamwork have the strongest impact on productivity, and that effectiveness is linked to workplace density and innovative workspaces drive engagement and boost the quality of life at work.
