New development in Mechelen
While Uplace continues to encounter delays with its major shopping centre complex in Machelen, it is going ahead with the development of a large office complex a few kilometres further north, in Mechelen.
This complex, which is to be marketed by JLL, is called York Business Park and extends to a total of some 9,000 m². It is designed to be very flexible, in order to enable companies to take space from around 570 m², for use as offices or showroom/exhibition space. It will also be highly energy efficient.
York Business Park offers a high degree of visibility in a zone which is between the two largest office markets in Belgium – Brussels and Antwerp – and which is also just a few minutes’ drive from Brussels Airport. The E19 which runs alongside the complex is a major European thoroughfare connecting Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris.
Mechelen itself has developed from being ‘extra-peripheral’ into an office market in its own right over the past couple of decades. It has not been immune to the recent downturn, but as JLL’s Ralph Schellen, Head of Office Agency Flanders, points out: “Despite a somewhat slow start to the year for Mechelen, the outlook for this region remains very promising. York Business Park is one of the rare opportunities in the region. It will be possible to construct it entirely ‘made to measure’, and it is strategically located with easy access”.
